Committee Descriptions

Committees are vital to the development and management of SHRM of Johnson County.  SHRMJC is entirely managed and operated through a volunteer board of directors, committees and volunteer committee members.

Awards & Recognition Committee

This committee serves the chapter by recognizing individual and chapter achievements throughout the year.  We capture moments and events through photographs and video, ensure nomination for awards are submitted timely and prepare quarterly and annual award recognition.

Certification Committee

The mission of the SHRMJC Certification Committee is to provide education and guidance to current members in their quest to obtain SHRM Certification.  We do this by being available to answer questions regarding the benefits of certification, exam schedules, deadlines, fees and eligibility requirements, as well as keeping members informed about, and facilitating, upcoming study sessions.

Goals: Promote Professional Development via the certification process as defined by SHRM and HRCI with an objective to certify as many members as possible.

Methods: Information provided via the newsletter, at monthly membership meetings and through SHRMJC's Certification Study Group.

Benefits: Exciting opportunities to enhance one's own professional development as well as raising the standards for the association and the profession.

Committee Responsibilities May Include:

  • Certification committee members help plan the bi-annual SHRMJC SHRM-credential study groups. 
  • Promote SHRM credential updates at chapter meetings, share information on SHRM credential recertification at chapter meetings.
  • Work with other SHRMJC committees to recognize chapter members who have recently received their SHRM credentials. 

Any time you are available to volunteer is appreciated - the time commitment is typically 30 minutes a week or less.

College Relations Committee

We realize the challenges encountered by college students as they prepare to start their careers.  Our goal is to help these soon-to-be professionals make a smooth transition into the workforce by providing them with professional support and development opportunities that will aid them in their roles as HR practitioners.

Goals: Provides a liaison between SHRMJC and area universities keeping student SHRM chapters informed of activities related to the HR profession.

Methods: By developing and supporting ongoing relationships between faculties and student chapters and by providing programs and communication to stimulate activity within SHRMJC.

Benefits: Committee members aid in practical guidance to students interested in the HR fields and provide a professional network to help stimulate their growth and career development. Also helps to bridge the transition from student membership to professional membership.

Communications Committee

It's hard enough handling all of the day-to-day issues that arise in your organization in addition to keeping abreast of the constant changes in the HR field.  That's where we come in.  The Communications Committee is focused on providing the Johnson County HR community with timely, pertinent and topical information that's just a click away! Through the continuing development of the SHRMJC website and by partnering with the other committees, we strive to keep our website fresh and relevant to support your professional development.

Goals: To ensure all communications for SHRMJC enhance the brand and support the strategy.

Methods: Continuously improve and maintain the SHRMJC Website, Newsletter and various other communication mediums in promoting strategic objectives, member activities and the professional image within the organization and business community at large.

Benefits: Opportunity to help move SHRMJC forward, promoting the value to the membership and business community while networking and gaining insight into branding, marketing and effective communication.

Diversity Committee

The SHRMJC Diversity Committee exists to foster an inclusive environment within SHRMJC through behaviors, image and reputation.  Ensuring that SHRMJC is viewed both internally and externally as an inclusive organization that values differences and supports all members and affiliates is a primary goal of the events and resources offered through our committee.

Government & Legal Affairs Committee

This Committee provides assistance to the human resources community by keeping members informed about legislative and administrative developments.  It also assists members in petitioning legislative and administrative officials at the federal and state levels. 

Goals: Encourages legislative advocacy. Enables SHRMJC members to influence the outcome of federal and state legislation through education, opportunities for involvement and to provide a voice to legislators on workplace issues.

Methods: By networking with legislators and keeping SHRMJC members up to date on changes in the law through publications and meetings.

Benefits: Committee members become aware of and involved in legislative issues that have a direct impact on their role as an HR professional within their organization.

Marketing & Public Relations Committee

The Marketing & PR committee promotes the chapter by obtaining Annual Business Partners and sponsors for monthly meetings and publicizing chapter meetings,events and programs to the general public and HR community.

Committee Responsibilities May Include:

  • Provide news releases to the media and serve as the primary contact for the news media for human resource issues and events; place ads in the Business Journal and other media.
  • Acquire and maintain relationships with Annual Business Partners; coordinate the communication and receipt of all sponsor benefits throughout the year.
  • Identify and secure monthly meeting sponsors via email, social media, or phone; coordinate the communication and receipt of all sponsor benefits leading up to and during the meeting/event.
  • Acquire newsletter advertisements and E-blast advertisements from Johnson County businesses.
  • Promote the Career Center, Salary Survey and other SHRMJC programs to the community.

Membership Committee

Help SHRMJC grow and maintain members by contributing in areas such as member engagement, making welcome calls, organizing events, analyzing member trends and creating membership material. 

Committee Responsibilities Include:

Attract Members and Grow SHRMJC! Contact potential members and monitor membership email.

Engage Members!  Make welcome calls, send guidebooks, greet people at events, help them establish meaningful connections.

Inform and Connect!  Facilitate new member welcome programs, upload new communication letters, make announcements, invite and remind people about upcoming events, get contact information updates from members.

Organize Events!  Schedule venues, order/account for food and beverages, provide the communication and social media team with information on event, take print media, SHRMJC banner to meetings.

Provide Analysis!  Create quote sheets for membership renewals, run and analyze monthly reports.

Create Winning Materials!  Script membership presentations, write content for membership web pages, membership template letters and posting updates, take notes during committee meetings and distribute.

Improve SHRMJC!  Ensure membership pages are correct, edit letters, marketing materials and forms, update New Member Welcome Guide, research best practices of other SHRM organizations.

Programs Committee

Getting an education and learning on the job are great ways to establish and develop your skills.  But did you know that you have another great resource through SHRMJC to help you continue to learn and grow?  Our committee focuses on sourcing and coordinating monthly development and educational programs. We also work with the Certification and Membership committees on program design, collecting feedback on our offerings and ideas for new programs.

Social Media Committee

Our committee produces monitors and contributes to the monthly e-newsletter and social media campaigns and seeks opportunities to increase awareness of SHRMJC. We ensure complete communication of events and news with our members.

Workforce Readiness Committee

We are committed to assisting the job seeking public with their search for better opportunities.  We do this by providing interview guidance, resume review, networking and search techniques, and lending a sympathetic ear when the frustration boils over.  We partner with local job club groups and the county library system, and overlap our mission with other SHRMJC committees, such as Membership, Diversity, and Student Relations..
