Hear the first hand experience and lessons learned of dealing with an active shooter.

This presentation will begin with a brief overview of the shooting incident on February 25, 2016 at Excel Industries in Hesston, Kansas. The presenter will review the experiences of the HR department, the role the department had during the immediate hours, days and weeks after the event, the role of HR now, two years after the event. The presenter will explore recommendations and lessons learned. There will be a question and answer time at the end of the presentation. 

We will discuss:

  • What to consider when preparing an HR department for a traumatic event.
  • The Role of HR after a traumatic event.
  • What to consider when you as a leader are a victim of violence.
  • Understanding the roles of HR, company leadership, law enforcement, community, and media when a traumatic event occurs in the company or organization. 
  • Question and answer discussion time.

This program has been approved for 1.5 credit by the HRCI and SHRM.


Speaker Bio:

Lamar Roth, SHRM-CP, serves as the Director of Human Resources at Excel Industries, Inc. in Hesston, Kansas. He has been in this position since May of 2014 after completing an eleven year tenure as Vice President of Student Life at Hesston College.

Lamar received a degree in Religion as well as Psychology from Goshen College in Goshen, Indiana. He earned his Masters degree in Clinical Psychology from Western Kentucky University in 1988 and served as a Clinical Psychotherapist for fifteen years at Pawnee Mental Health Services in Junction City and Central Kansas Mental Health Center in Abilene Kansas.

Lamar was the Director of Human Resources at Excel Industries when 4 employees were killed in a shooting in Excel's production plant. He continues in that role today.
