We will cover best practices regarding resume filtering, interviewing, and pre-employment tests such as drug testing and background checks.
We will discuss:
- When are background checks appropriate?
- What are best practices involving background checks?
- Should employers be testing for marijuana and other drugs absent a reasonable suspicion of use by the employee?
- How do employers avoid claims for discrimination in the interviewing and hiring process?
This program has been approved for 1 certification credit with SHRM and HRCI.
Kyle Russell has nearly 20 years of experience as an attorney, and his practice is devoted entirely to representing employers in workplace law issues. He defends single-plaintiff and class action litigation involving allegations of discrimination, harassment, retaliation, wage and hour issues, FMLA non-compliance, and failure to follow required processes on background checks. He also prosecutes and defends lawsuits involving enforcement of non-competition agreements and protection of company trade secrets. In addition to litigation, he devotes a large part of his practice to employment law advice and counseling, as well as training both hourly employees and managers on a variety of employment law topics. In addition to his legal practice, Kyle is involved in the legal and HR professions, and in the community. He is currently the Director of Legal and Legislative Affairs for SHRM-JC, as well as the Chair of the governing board of Johnson County Developmental Supports, the agency that provides services for county residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities. He is also Chair of the Rules and Bylaws Committee for the Kansas Democratic Party, and is a huge sports fan, especially of the Royals and Chiefs (even when they are not so good!).

We will be meeting in a Ballroom. When you arrive at the DoubleTree, drive around to the back of the hotel (the North side) and park in the back parking lot. The Ballroom is near the glass north entrance doors.

There is an additional $5.00 service charge for all late and walk-in registrations.
SHRMJC's Cancellation Policy: If you must cancel your reservation, please do so no later than 72-hours prior to the event. We are required to turn in the number of registered attendees to the DoubleTree for planning purposes and must pay for the number of attendees we anticipate, whether they attend or not. As a not-for-profit organization we simply can't afford to pay for no-shows. Thanks for understanding!
